The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is designating PPPL as a historic mechanical engineering landmark. The ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 5, 2018, at 9:00 a.m. EDT, and will consist of the presentation and unveiling of a bronze plaque honoring the Laboratory. The ASME designation, begun in 1971, recognizes more than 250 engineering landmarks around the world, including those at national laboratories, encouraging preservation of historically important works and providing a roster of the significance of mechanical engineering to society. The ceremony will be in the lobby.

The designation of the Laboratory as a landmark site recognizes its overall achievements and the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor in particular. A section of the plaque reads:

"ENGINEERS HERE DEVELOPED NEW FABRICATION TECHNIQUES THAT PRODUCED A FACILITY WITH THE STRUCTURAL STRENGTH AND STRICT MECHANICAL TOLERANCES REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE WORLD-RECORD FUSION PLASMA PERFORMANCE. THIS LABORATORY CONTINUES TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE WORLD’S FUSION ENERGY RESEARCH."
