A composite boom is loaded into an autoclave at the AFRL Space Vehicles, Integrated Structural Systems Laboratory. The industrial-sized autoclave is used by AFRL scientists to cure composite structures created in the lab. Autoclaves use high temperature and pressure to harden composite material. The machine is used to create High Strain Composite (HSC) deployable space structures. HSC structures are light, compact structures that change shape when deploying. Some benefits from these structures include folding into smaller and more compact sizes, and smooth deployment.
