(WASHINGTON, DC - April 30, 2021) Most travelers don’t realize just how many of the products and technologies they encounter at airports originated in federal laboratories. The Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) today unveiled a new interactive virtual experience known as LabTech In Your Life Aiport Edition to increase awareness of those federal innovations.
The new LabTech In Your Life experience, filmed on location at the Albuquerque Sunport International Airport in New Mexico, highlights 31 technologies developed by 11 federal laboratories from seven federal agencies: DoD, DHS, DOE, FAA, USDA, DOC, and NASA. It showcases key innovations that evolved from taxpayer funded research to make air travel safer and more comfortable. These products, which span check-in to cockpit, are the result of successful technology transfer – a vital process that moves federal innovation out of the lab and into the marketplace.
Some of the technologies might surprise you: The USDA, for example, not only develops healthy snack food, but also works to protect wildlife and enhance the airport grounds with low-maintenance vegetation.
“LabTech in Your Life is an amazing virtual experience that educates the public about how the benefits of federal technology transfer really impact our daily lives in a positive way,” said Paul Zielinski, Executive Director of the FLC. “And it’s very fitting that we’re using technology to more effectively convey that message.”
A previous version of Lab Tech In Your Life focused on items found inside the home and was launched in 2018. Both the Home and Airport versions, along with complete lists of the featured technologies, can be found on the FLC website.
