Lawrence (Larry) Udell, Licensing Executives Society
Lawrence (Larry) Udell has been deeply engaged in the world of inventors for over 70 years and has launched more than twenty companies. He began working with lab researchers in the late 1980s at institutions such as LLNL and Sandia, leveraging business school students while teaching New Ventures as a Professor of Entrepreneurship at California State University.
In 1991, he pioneered a program that formed student teams to collaborate directly with lab researchers in exploring the commercialization potential of their technologies. This initiative led to a technology transfer from LLNL to Lockheed and was featured in The Wall Street Journal on September 17, 1992. He also created the Technology Transfer & Commercialization (T2C) program at UC Berkeley, which was funded by the Department of Energy.
For over 60 years, Larry has served as an independent consultant, advising clients ranging from startups and Fortune 500 companies to government agencies. A member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) since 1982, he founded the Silicon Valley Chapter in 2000, now recognized as the most successful chapter within the 97 countries of LES International (LESI).
Additionally, he conducts a monthly, nationwide educational virtual program for the USPTO.
