Fluorine and Lithium: Critical Elements in Production of Battery Electrolytes

Li-ion batteries are a critical enabling technology in the world’s conversion from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Importance of Cobalt, Lithium, Nickel and some other elements is well known in battery circles. These critical materials are used in cathodes and other key components of the battery cell. Fluorine is another important element which is currently used in electrolytes, cathode binders ad other battery components.

In this Critical Materials Institute webinar, we will provide an overview of battery electrolyte technologies and then discuss importance of fluorine in sustainable production of battery electrolytes and other battery components. We will also discuss approaches to improve cost competitiveness and enable North American based supply chain of critical battery materials.
