Domestic Preparedness Support Initiative Funds Three Technologies for Warfighters and First Responders

The Domestic Preparedness Support Initiative (DPSI), within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Hemispheric Affairs, has awarded $200,000 in Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) funding to three Department of Defense research teams that are developing dual-use technology to support warfighters and first responders.

  • One-handed Surface Sampling Device: Designed to reduce exposure during the collection of narcotics such as fentanyl.

Dr. Alexander Gruentzig
U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM)

  • Smart Wound Detection Shirt: Smart garment technology that detects a penetrating wound's point of entry and sends information back to a command post.

Dr. Thomas England
Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (NSWC IHEODTD)

  • Memsel MEDdefender: A handheld device that sprays a novel contactless nanofiber hydrogel dressing over a wound without size or shape restrictions.
