TEDCO's contributions to NCI-FNL Technology Showcase continue in 2021

August 18, 2021

Four years after helping the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Frederick National Laboratory (FNL) to launch a Technology Showcase, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) continues to be a key player in what has become an annual event. The 2021 NCI-FNL Technology Showcase will take place on September 1.

This event, hosted by the National Cancer Institute and Frederick National Laboratory, showcases federal technologies to prospective partners and strengthen public-private relationships that support the regional economy. The success of this event earned it a 2021 FLC National Award for State and Local Economic Development.

FLC partner TEDCO fosters economic development and entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems by identifying, investing in, and helping grow technology companies in Maryland. TEDCO serves as a liaison to facilitate interactions and collaborations between federal government and Maryland technology companies.

When the Technology Showcase was launched in 2017, TEDCO's Director of Federal Programs was a key member of the inaugural group of stakeholder organizations that planned the event under a co-sponsorship agreement. The NCI's Technology Transfer Center, the NCI Frederick Office of Scientific Operations, and the FNL Partnership Development Office reached out to the economic developoment offices of TEDCO and the City and County of Frederick to leverage their regional knowledge, resources, relationships and expertise.

TEDCO has continued its involvement with the Technology Showcase as it has evolved and expanded. Originally a regional event, the NCI-FNL Technology Showcase has grown to include potential collaborators from outside the state of Maryland. Technology Showcase events so far have highlighted 84 technologies, and have led to multiple collaborative interactions that have included Confidential Nondisclosure Agreements, Commercial Evaluation Licenses, and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs).

This year, TEDCO's new Director of Federal Programs, Kimberly Mozingo, will participate in a panel discussion on funding and resources for start-up companies. Mozingo joined TEDCO in January 2021.

In addition to panel sessions on technology commercialization, the free, half-day virtual event will feature:

  • Presentations from NCI and FNL inventors about technologies primed for commercialization and/or collaboration; great opportunity for biotech stakeholders and companies of all sizes, including start-ups.

  • Lightning Pitch & Poster Session highlighting additional NIH technologies available for licensing and collaborative development presented by the NCI Technology Transfer Ambassadors Program (which won an FLC National Award for Technology Transfer Innovation in 2020).

  • Networking with regional life science professionals from multiple sectors, including industry, government, investment, entrepreneurship, and academia.
