Description

The National Weather Service's (NWS) Meteorological Development Laboratory (MDL) was formed in 1964. At that time, it was named "Techniques Development Laboratory (TDL)." By the late 1960s, TDL scientists were implementing automated wave height and temperature forecasts, based on the operational output of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. During the 1970s, TDL scientists created Model Output Statistics (MOS). MOS has formed an important part of MDL's mission since that time. Since then, MDL has implemented many innovations into the operational framework of the NWS. In addition to statistical post-processing, MDL makes important contributions to NWS programs such as AWIPS, Integrated Dissemination Program, National Digital Forecast Database, storm surge, forecast verification, and the Virtual Laboratory.
