The Northeast Area of ARS is among the largest and most diversified agricultural research units in the world and consists of 15 research facilities housing 46 laboratories located in 11 states and the District of Columbia. These centers include the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., the Eastern Regional Research Center in Philadelphia, PA, the Robert C. Holey Center of Agricultural & Health in Ithaca, NY, Plum Island Animal Disease Center at Orient Point, NY, The Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Center in Boston, MA, the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center and the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center(BARC) in Beltsville, MD. The Beltsville location, headquarters of the NEA, was created in 1910 when the U.S. Department of Agriculture purchased a 475-acre farm about 15 miles northeast of Washington, D.C. to conduct research on animal husbandry, dairying, and animal diseases. Today, at Beltsville work is carried out in facilities across about 6,400 acres that includes, research laboratories, greenhouses, barns, poultry houses, shops, and administration offices.

ARS conducts research to develop and transfer solutions to agricultural problems of high national priority and provide information access and dissemination in order to:

  • Ensure high-quality safe food and other agricultural products;
  • Assess the nutritional needs of Americans;
  • Sustain a competitive agricultural economy;
  • Enhance the natural resource base and the environment;
  • Provide economic opportunities for rural citizens, communities, and society as a whole.
  • Provide the infrastructure necessary to create and maintain a diversified workplace.

Research in the Northeast addresses these goals.
