AFRL, Griffiss Institute Announce Winners of AFRL Commercialization Academy Demo Day

The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate (AFRL/RI), together with Griffiss Institute, has announced the winners of the AFRL Commercialization Academy Demo Day and IDEA NY business accelerator competition, held March 21, 2019, at Griffiss Institute in Rome, NY.

Go Figure of Utica, NY, walked away with the grand prize of $200,000, and the runner-up, SkyTubeLive of Oneida, NY, took home $100,000.

The Commercialization Academy is a Griffiss Institute entrepreneurial education program sponsored by the AFRL/RI. Griffiss Institute has partnered with Wasabi Ventures to run the academy in since 2015. The Academy pairs high-caliber founders and high-potential AFRL technologies with the goals of developing entrepreneurial leaders and launching new technology ventures.

The Commercialization Academy program is derived from the proven Wasabi Ventures Academy curriculum and acceleration process, which has supported more than 200 startups over the past decade, consists of three component tracks that run concurrently:

  1. Entrepreneurship education for founders
  2. Technology due diligence, ideation and market validation
  3. Team and company formation, technology licensure, and business acceleration.

The 2019 Commercialization Academy program will begin with startups drawn from across the country, as well as New York. All teams will complete the 4-month Commercialization Academy curriculum and achieve important milestones that will qualify them to pitch to local investors, stakeholders, and funding partners at a 2019 Demo Day.
