Courtesy of Argonne National Laboratory, this snapshot shows “oil-water” mixing (aqueous phase has been dyed blue) in a unique mixer-centrifuge used for nuclear fuel recycling called an annular centrifugal contactor. This unit has been customized with over 160 electrodes for measurements using a technique called electrical resistance tomography (ERT) to provide data for validation of advanced multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.
