NIST: 3-D Microfluidic Device

At NIST’s Material Measurement Laboratory (MML), researchers created dynamic microfluidic systems that incorporate elastomeric valving into thin materials such as plastic films and tapes. Shown is a 25-mm-per-side cube whose walls contain microfluidic channels and valves. In one trial, the researchers filled it with agar and grew nematodes (Caenorhabditis elegans). Using the microchannels, ports and valves built into the cube’s walls, they injected chemicals at controlled concentrations that either attracted or repelled the worms. This cube allows for studying a living organism’s response to chemical stimuli within a closed environment.
