Trace Contamination Study Aid Tests New Detection Technologies

The United State Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Volpe Center supports the Federal Railroad Administration’s mission to ensure safe transportation of hazardous materials.  Volpe experts help to plan and analyze impact tests on rail tank cars at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, CO. Volpe develops finite element models to estimate the structural responses of tank cars under a variety of impact conditions. Data collected during tests are compared with model results to verify and improve the performance of the models. The research is critical for government and industry to assess tank car puncture risks and develop strategies to improve hazmat tank car impact performance.
