ORNL Opens Office in Chattanooga Innovation District to Spur Area Business Collaboration

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) announced in May that it would be opening an office at EPB—an electric utility company that serves much of the Chattanooga region—headquarters in Chattanooga, Tenn. As of early this week, ORNL has officially opened the office in Chattanooga’s Innovation District, and is ready to build on existing business collaborations it has established in the area.

When asked about his hopes for the new EPB office, ORNL Director Thom Mason stated, “The work involving EPB, the Department of Energy, and ORNL illustrates the power of regional cooperation. We want to accelerate opportunities in developing clean energy technology, manufacturing, and computing.”

In addition to continuing its existing collaboration with EPB, the new ORNL office will offer expertise and facilities to other potential businesses in the Chattanooga area to accelerate technology transfer. The opening of the office comes at just the right time, as the area continues to push toward spurring innovation and leveraging ORNL resources among businesses.

Tim Spires, head of the Chattanooga-based Tennessee Association of Manufacturers, remarked that not only will ORNL’s new office advance the manufacturing sector’s growth, it will also “open up opportunities for companies who have new product lines and who need that type of support. It will open up entrepreneurship opportunities. Some of that technology can be transferred out.“
