USBR-led analysis finds ancient data to inform present-day drought management

Tree rings and other evidence of ancient climate patterns analyzed by researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Geological Survey and two university partners the suggest the ongoing 22-year Colorado River drought is not the region's most severe drought in the last 2,000 years. The team's identification of an even more extreme drought in the second century CE will help water managers better understand the current drought and more effectively mitigate its impacts.
