To meet the needs of the Warfighter, Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) standards are essential in achieving interoperability of imagery capabilities across the National Systems for GEOINT (NSG) Enterprise ranging from sensor systems, to ground stations, to enhancement applications, to exploitation workstations. These standards have become ever more critical as imagery capabilities have become prolific across the battlefield, from water to ground, to air, to space, with exponential increases in diversity, complexity, and data production. For the past decade, data production has surpassed the capacity of trained analysts and created the need to enhance data sharing (e.g. accessibility, visibility, understandability, trustworthiness, interoperability, responsiveness) to allow analysts across the Enterprise to manage and exploit this volume.

Amongst the GEOINT standards are the standards governing still imagery capabilities, known as NITF Standards. These standards are implemented by the Department of Defense (DoD), Intelligence Community (IC), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Coalition Partners, and commercial programs.
