Come a day early to participate in FLC's Training Day with in-depth instruction to build your T2 skills for beginner to advanced practitioners.

Full-Day Training Courses (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) April 9, 2024 

CRADA Course (Intermediate)

This full-day course will cover Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs). CRADA’s are one of technology transfer’s most important mechanisms and understanding them is crucial for most federal T2 professionals. This intermediate-level course offers a one-stop shop for everything CRADA. You will learn about the CRADA and how it works from seasoned experts who will share a real-life example. Course topics include CRADA authority and laws, practices, and pitfalls, as well as intellectual property considerations. 

Intellectual Property for T2 Professionals (Beginner)

This full-day course is designed to provide Technology Transfer Specialists, who are not Patent Practitioners, the basics of intellectual property and how to use this information to make informed decisions relating to your agency’s Intellectual property and licensing management.  The class will cover practice tips, types of intellectual property (IP), the value of IP, steps to protect IP, an in-depth review of the process for obtaining a patent including identifying inventions, how to report an invention, inventorship, ownership, patent application preparation and parts, patent prosecution, foreign patent protection, patent post issuance challenges, Trademarks, Copyrights, and Fair Use; and Export Control.   

Real life examples will be provided as well as group exercises, for example, in claim writing and responses to USPTO office actions.  

Leadership and Communication Course (Advanced) 

Instructor: Helio Fred Garcia, Logos Consulting Group 

This full-day course will review effective leadership communication which creates competitive advantage for individuals, teams, and enterprises. There is a rigor to effective leadership communication, but too often that rigor is not well known or is ignored by leaders who believe that communication at work is equivalent to personal communication, at which most people are proficient.  

T2 for the ORTA: An Interactive Course (Beginner)

This full-day course on technology transfer fundamentals covers all you need to know to dive in. Instructors will share their experiences in technology transfer and walk you through the fundamental authorities governing federal T2. Using real-world examples of technologies moved from the federal sector to private industry, they will share tricks of the trade and provide exercises you can apply in real-time. 

Solving 4 X (Advanced)

This full-day course will introduce and reinforce a variety of ways to approach organizational challenges and innovation barriers in the government. Processes and methodologies generally associated with entrepreneurship and start-up successes are beneficial when applied to unique, transformative government opportunities. Attendees will learn to operate an Innovation Pipeline starting with problem-statement discovery through executing a successful MVP translation, overlaid with ideas and anecdotes specific to government innovation.

Half-Day Training Courses (8 a.m. - Noon) April 9, 2024 

Applied Risk Management (Beginner) 

Instructor:  Nahla Ivy, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 

This half-day course will review “Applied Risk Management” which examines the foundations of risk management and enterprise risk management in both theory and application. Participants will become familiar with risk management principles and how these can be implemented within your organization for greatest impact.  Following an overview of the foundations, participants will be able to apply the tools and techniques in a working group setting using a case study.  After completing this course, participants will understand the value of layered risk management and develop familiarity with commonly used tools and templates to identify, analyze, and monitor risks. 

This course is designed for individuals at an introductory to moderate level of familiarity with risk management. The best practices, tools and templates that are discussed can be applied from the individual program or project level up to an organizational and enterprise-level view.  

Marketing the Lab Inside and Out (Intermediate)

This half-day course will cover marketing topics of interest including, train up your inventor “salesforce”, stage gate processes for converting data into valuable market intelligence, direct and indirect marketing best practices, and ways to measure marketing success. Participants will learn about creative approaches to reach current and new audiences, tools that help you share your message, and building your network. 

Half-Day Training Courses (1 - 5 p.m.) April 9, 2024 

Negotiations (Intermediate) 

Instructor: Steve Ferguson, National Institutes of Health (NIH) 

In this half-day course, we will cover the basics of how to initiate and conduct an effective negotiation. We will also dive deeper into more advanced negotiation subjects such as managing influences, the relationship between power and authority, negotiation mediums, handling emotions and stress, identification of hot buttons, and the benefits of non-verbal communications. 

Partnership Intermediary Agreements (Intermediate) 

Instructor:  Michael Fitzpatrick, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) 

This half-day course you will learn the basics of PIAs, services available to facilitate technology transfer to the private sector, and how to increase the likelihood of success in conducting cooperative joint activities. In addition, you'll review what a partnership intermediary (PI) is, for a state or local government, or a non-profit entity owned/funded/chartered/operated in whole or in part by a state or local government that assists, counsels, advises, evaluates or otherwise cooperates with small business firms and educational institutions.
