Welcome to The Transfer Files. This is your insider's look at how federal laboratories bring groundbreaking technologies to market. In every episode, we'll bring you insights and expertise from the expansive world of tech transfer.

Paul Zielinski leads the Federal Laboratory Consortium of Technology Transfer (FLC), a network of hundreds of member laboratories from federal agencies including the Department of Defense, Department of Commerce and others. The FLC supports these government labs in technology transfer (T2), the process by which lab inventions are adapted, manufactured, marketed and sold as commercial products to benefit the public.

As the FLC celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, Paul discusses the consortium's formation, its evolution over the past five decades and its future direction. Listen to discover:

  • How the idea of technology transfer crystallized during World War II
  • How tech transfer grew from an idea with a small group of promoters to a growing ecosystem with communities and infrastructure
  • How Paul got into tech transfer in the 1980s when he was cleaning nuclear waste sites and needed technology that didn’t exist
  • And much more!
