2021 Maritime Risk Symposium goes virtual and extends poster contest deadline

August 30, 2021

The 2021 Maritime Risk Symposium, hosted by the University of Houston College of Technology, has made two updates to its November 2021 event: The symposium will be held in a virtual format, and the deadline for the event's student poster contest has been extended to October 15.

The Maritime Risk Symposium is an annual three-day conference in which government and maritime industry leaders, port representatives, researchers, and solution providers convene to examine current and emerging threats to maritime security. It will take place November 2-4, 2021.

Through presentations, panels, and open forums, the 2021 Maritime Risk Symposium will be organized into five tracks:

1. Decarbonization and the Transition to Green Technologies

2. Autonomous Vessels and Systems

3. Cybersecurity

4. Security and Resilience of the Maritime Supply Chain

5. The Arctic Maritime

Federal laboratories that work with college students will also want to note that the event will include a Student Research Poster Competition. The competition is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate-level students to contribute to the field of maritime risk, gain professional recognition, and build a network of like-minded students, colleagues, and mentors.

Posters should depict research done by the student or students, generally with the guidance of a faculty advisor. The research could include interviews, literature reviews, an explanation of emerging technology, policy analysis, or other methods of examining risk factors in the maritime domain. The poster will, in general, identify a gap or problem area, evaluate possible solutions or way ahead, and outline future actions, policy steps, or research needed for continued advancement.

The posters will be displayed during the symposium, and the student authors will provide a short presentation of their work. The authors of the winning posters also will have breakfast on Day 3 of the Maritime Risk Symposium with key Maritime Risk Symposium leaders.

The authors of the Top 12 submissions will receive a framed Certificate of Award and coins from the Maritime Risk Symposium, and the authors of all accepted poster contest submissions will receive a Certificate of Participation.
