AFRL partner pivots to make hand sanitizer for COVID-19 first responders

Dayton-based Battle Sight Technologies, an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) technology transfer partner, is shifting from military and first-responder-focused technologies to making much-needed hand sanitizer for COVID-19 first responders.

Nicholas Ripplinger, the U.S. Army veteran who founded Battle Sight, said the company recently completely retooled its Craytech production line to bottle hand sanitizer. The company has produced 925 8-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer slated for donation to police and first-responders. The company also plans to sell two-liter bottles of the liquid.

Craytech is the company’s flagship product, a writing device with a pressure-activated chemiluminescence that leaves writing that can detected by soldiers with night-vision gear, while remaining invisible to the enemy. The product is based on the Marking Appliance Reusable Chemiluminescent (MARC) technology developed by the AFRL and licensed by Battle Sight in November 2017.

While the company’s production line usually performs a hot pour of the waxy chemiluminescence substance, Battle Sight was able to quickly reconfigure it for hand sanitizer production.
