Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed the Fierro open-source computational mechanics and materials science software package to achieve the potential of advanced manufacturing. Multiscale models predict product behavior by simulating how fine-scale material properties and topology control bulk-scale performance under various conditions. Fierro can autonomously design the part topology, such as lattices for stress wave dissipation, which is important for energy-absorbing products like helmets or car bumpers. The AI process searches for the optimal design among millions of possible design choices and leverages the flexibility of additive manufacturing. This results in superior products and savings for diverse industries and applications.
