Ultra-fast selective delamination (UFSD), developed at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, has revolutionized Li-ion battery recycling by quickly recovering high-quality critical materials and high-purity metals – such as graphite, copper, and cathode powders – without expensive, high-temperature, or mechanical separation processes. UFSD is a low-temperature, dry process that offers numerous benefits – it reduces costs, generates no hazardous waste, consumes less energy, and lowers the carbon footprint. UFSD is highly flexible, allowing integration at various stages of the recycling process and supports environmental sustainability in the recycling industry.
