The Janus – Target Area #1 target chamber platform at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF) is one of the few hands-on facilities in the world where two high energy laser beams (1 kilojoule each) can interact with samples to study matter under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. The JLF helps develop new platforms and techniques for high energy density and fusion sciences and for future experiments at larger laser facilities. The facility has been instrumental in developing novel diagnostics for the National Ignition Facility and academia, national labs and industry all benefit from using this technology.
