Photo of the Week: Let It Snow: Researchers Predict Drifting and Melting

September 6, 2023

The Photo of the Week visually showcases the exciting work federal labs do every day!

About this photo:

Blowing snow is an extreme terrain hazard that can cause severe reductions in ground visibility and force snow to drift. These threats pose significant risk to civil and military operations and trainings (pictured) in snow-covered regions. A model developed by engineers and scientists with the Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) is providing critical information to better forecast blowing snow and predict the areas it may impact. CRREL researchers are also working to enhance models to predict how melting snow affects river and stream flow forecasts in the densely populated Northeast United States.

About the federal lab:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL)

USACE ERDC CRREL develops innovative solutions for science and engineering challenges in extreme environments. With a history of success at both the North and South poles, CRREL uses its unique cold-regions expertise and facilities to ensure the Department of Defense and the nation are prepared to operate in cold, complex, and extreme environments.
