Photo of the Week: Using Nature-Based Solutions to Prevent Storm Damage

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Engineering With Nature® (EWN®) and the Mobile District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) partnered with nature to achieve coastal storm damage reduction in Mississippi. Ship Island was restored using dredged sediments and native plants, creating valuable habitats for sea turtles, migratory birds, fish, and shellfish as well as storm protection. Beyond the ecological impact, these rejuvenated islands have become popular tourist destinations, showcasing the tremendous benefits of nature-based solutions for both the environment and local communities.
