Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and collaborators, such as Rigetti Computing and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, have used a new technique to identify impurities within physical superconducting qubits, quantum bits, that can limit the lifespan of quantum information. These impurities can cause quantum decoherence, as scientists from the Fermilab-led Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center highlight in a paper published in Applied Physics Letters. When cubits are less affected by quantum decoherence, the power of quantum computers will be unlocked, giving scientists a new tool for calculations beyond the capability of classical computers to solve.
