Increased awareness of the potential use ofbiological agents as weapons of terror andmass destruction underscores the importanceof finding a means to sample and detect agentsquickly and effectively. The BiologicalDetection Kit (BDK) consists of sampling anddetection equipment for biological agents, including large area surfaces, small solidsamples, liquid samples, and air samples. Thekit is integrated into a single package that cananalyze samples for the presence of DNA,protein, and bacteria. The BDK borrowstechniques from food safety, personal airmonitoring and other arenas, and integratesthem with new approaches to create atechnology that can be easily used in the field. The BDK team’s technology transfer efforttook several forms. A CRADA wasestablished with New Horizons Diagnostics,Inc. to package the kit. EAI Corporationserved as another CRADA partner to furtherrefine and market the BDK. Other vendors, including Turner Designs, Inc., MolecularProbes, Inc., and Chemmetrics, Inc., areproviding the BDK team with supplies, reagents and specialized expertise. In addition,an information exchange agreementestablished with the Military Institute ofHygiene and Epidemiology in Poland enabledjoint development of the kit’s sporeluminescence protocol. The efforts behind the BDK have resulted inthe development of BioHaz™, a system thatprovides users with the capability to sampleand detect biological materials in suspectsamples. This product is currently beingmarketed by the Response EquipmentCorporation, a subsidiary of EAI Corporation. The kit is also being marketed as the SWIPE™sampling and spore luminecscence kit by NewHorizons Diagnostics, Inc. This technologyhas been used by hazmat teams in severalcities—including Washington, D.C. andVirginia Beach, Va.—in response to recentanthrax incidents.
