Regional Ecosystems

The Power of Regional Ecosystems in Federal Tech Transfer

Innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. Regional ecosystems — networks of innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, and manufacturers — play a critical role in turning federal research into real-world products. By connecting federal labs with local industry, academia, and economic development resources, these ecosystems accelerate commercialization and amplify the impact of federal technology transfer.

That’s why the FLC’s six geographical regions are at the heart of our mission. Each region is led by a Regional Coordinator and Deputy Regional Coordinator, who foster collaboration, share resources, and connect stakeholders across their innovation community.

Explore the maps below to discover the 300+ FLC member labs across every state and region.

  • Find your region.
  • Find Federal facilities in your area.
  • Find Federal labs and facilities in your area.

Together, regional ecosystems ensure that federal innovations move from lab to market — strengthening local economies, creating jobs, and advancing U.S. competitiveness.

This tool offers three powerful ways to explore federal facilities and funding:

Regional Heat Map: Easily identify concentrations of federal laboratories and facilities across the nation. In this view, areas rich in facilities are highlighted in red, while those with fewer are shown in blue. You can filter by region by clicking on the tile labeled with that region on the map and even zoom in to explore at the street level.

State-by-State: Quickly see whether a state has many or few federal facilities, with high-volume states in red and low-volume states in blue. Select a state to view a list of facilities located in that state with key information about each.

Federal Funding Report: At a glance, identify intramural and extramural federal funding for research and experimental development by state or agency.

Whether you're looking to connect, collaborate, or leverage resources, these maps make it easy to pinpoint key facilities in your area of interest. Start exploring now to find the connections you need to bring your innovation to life!
