The essential role of high-performance computing (HPC) to the future success of precision medicine continues to grow. The growth of artificial intelligence, the dramatic increase in the volume of research and clinical data available through sequencing and advanced imaging techniques; clinical data from medical records and mobile health devices; and research data from automated platforms all demand use and innovation in the applications of high-performance computing. Catalyzed by the rapidly evolving volume and type of data, the growing use of simulations across multiple scales of biomedicine, and the vigorous adoption of deep learning approaches, a convergence is underway that is shaping the frontiers of computing and precision medicine. New approaches to drug discovery, data sharing, data utilization and safeguards, and the use of machine learning models in research and clinical contexts has created new challenges and opportunities in these rapidly evolving frontiers.

The Fourth HPC Applications in Precision Medicine workshop is being held this year virtually (last year’s workshop was unfortunately cancelled) and will bring the computational and life sciences communities together to share experiences, examine current challenges, and discuss future opportunities for shaping the future of HPC applications in precision medicine.

A special focus for this year’s workshop will bring visibility to communities, advances, technologies and opportunities in pursuit of ‘digital twin’ technologies for biomedical applications. Proven platforms for innovation and exploration in many industries, digital twin capabilities for biomedicine are rapidly emerging and providing exciting new avenues for discovering new treatments, following patient health, and impacting disease prevention.
