Description

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory is part of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC), which has the mission to provide innovative research, development and engineering to produce capabilities that provide decisive overmatch to the Army against the complexities of the current and future operating environments in support of the joint warfighter and the nation. CCDC is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Futures Command.

Students spend at least one week during the summer at ARL facilities located at Adelphi, MD, or Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. They receive a $100 stipend for each week attended. Over 105 middle school students participate in summer programs in robotics, solar cars, composite materials, polymer science, and computer science. Workshops are designed to prepare teachers and non-formal educators in leading middle school children through Junior Solar Sprint, a highly engaging and successful program where children design, build and compete with model solar electric cars.

In order to stay on the leading edge of science and technology, a laboratory must have a constant influx of new ideas and fresh perspectives. The ARL brings in recent Ph.Ds or Sc.Ds to conduct high impact basic and applied research under the guidance of an ARL advisor through several postdoctoral research programs. The ARL has over 100 postdocs located at facilities in Adelphi, MD; Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD; White Sands, NM; and Orlando, FL.

How ARL Technology Lead to a More Efficient Cell Phone

Paratek Microwave, established in March 1998, successfully licensed patents from the Army Research Laboratory with the goal to commercialize electronically tunable components and subsystems developed on the basis of the low loss, tunable family of dielectric materials. The outcome of this licensing effort was the formation of a family of patents developed by Paratek Microwave that led to the development of tunable components like filters, oscillators, delay lines, phase shifters, and electronically scanning and tunable antennas. The addressable markets were for US defense applications and the commercial broadband wireless including mobile phones. Paratek was acquired by Blackberry to incorporate Paratek's tunable technology into their mobile phones.

The technology is a mainstream solution to multiple frequency bands and antenna performance in today's smartphones.

The application of rate-activated tethers for helmet suspension systems is specifically addressed in US Patent Application 16/295,101 – “Rate-Activated Helmet Suspension” (ARL docket 18-07), which is an unpublished patent application and not currently in the public domain. The regulatory authority for CCDC ARL to grant licenses (37 CFR 404.4) requires that “federally owned inventions shall be made available for licensing as deemed appropriate in the public interest and each agency shall notify the public of these available inventions.” Because public notice has not been provided either through official announcement or publication of the patent application, and given the potential for this invention to positively impact the health and safety of the US warfighter as well as the general public, this notice shall serve as public notification that CCDC ARL is making the invention available for non-exclusive licensing in order to best serve the public interest.
