The Oak Ridge Y-12 National Security Complex, with some 4,700
employees, is managed by BWXT Y-12, L.L.C. for the U.S. Department
of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. BWXT Y-12 is
a joint enterprise of BWX Technologies, Inc. and Bechtel National,
Inc. BWXT Y-12 is authorized to enter into technology transfer
agreements with industry under the National Competitiveness
Technology Transfer Act of 1989. The Y-12 National Security Complex
is renowned for its innovative precision manufacturing processes.
Specific areas of expertise are in materials science, microwave
processing, computer-aided engineering and design, agile
manufacturing, nondestructive testing, dimensional metrology,
microanalysis, chemical processing and chemical engineering,
coatings and surface finishing, composites, adhesives, welding and
bonding, and other advanced manufacturing technologies. Y-12
transfers such capabilities to the private sector for commercial
applications through technology licenses and Cooperative Research
and Development Agreements (CRADAs). The facility's long-standing
Work for Others program is also available to undertake projects
sponsored by other federal agencies as well as the private
sector.
Mission
With more than 60 years of experience to draw from, Y-12 is
uniquely qualified to address the existing and emerging security
challenges facing our nation and the world today. Operated by BWXT
Y-12 for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) within
the Department of Energy, Y-12 is a one-of-a-kind manufacturing
facility that plays an integral role in DOE's Nuclear Weapons
Complex. In this role, Y-12 provides critical elements of NNSA's
missions that ensure the safety, reliability and performance of the
U.S. nuclear weapons deterrent. Y-12 also uses its unique
capabilities to support the Research Reactors Programs for U.S. and
international customers, other federal agencies, such as the
Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security, state
and local governments, and private-sector companies.
Y-12 focuses its efforts in four strategic areas that ultimately help make the world a safer place:
-
Defense Programs - Y-12 employs unique processes and technologies to help safeguard and support the nation's nuclear defense.
- Nuclear Nonproliferation - Y-12 secures nuclear materials out of harm's way, such as the surrendered Libyan materials.
- Naval Reactors - Y-12 supplies the U.S. Navy with feedstock material for fabrication of reactor fuel.
- Complementary Work - Y-12 applies specialized skill and expertise to other missions of national interest.

Uranium Processing Facility
An integral part of Yâ12's transformation efforts and a key component of the National Nuclear Security Administration's Uranium Center of Excellence, the Uranium Processing Facility is one of two facilities at Yâ12 whose joint mission will be to accomplish the storage and processing of all enriched uranium in one much smaller, centralized area. Safety, security and flexibility are key design attributes of the facility, which is in the preliminary design phase of work. UPF will be built to modern standards and engage new technologies through a responsive and agile design. Upon completion, UPF will be a comprehensive uranium processing facility, appropriately sized and capable of meeting national security demands.
