AFRL Studying Insects to Improve Navigation and Sensing

A Bioprincipic Research Team at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is developing bio-inspired sensors for agile flight and sensory ecology and information exploitation. The interdisciplinary team of biologists, physicists, and engineers research the ways in which biological systems sense and navigate through their environments to gain an understanding of the principles driving the efficient, robust navigation performance they exhibit. The team seeks to apply those principles to improve systems of interest to the U.S. Air Force. One such engineered system is the wide field-of-view (WFOV) seeker that could allow systems a much wider field-of-view for situational awareness, obstacle avoidance, and navigation.
