Argonne’s In-flight Radioactive Ion Separator (AIRIS)

The Argonne In-flight Radioactive Ion Separator (AIRIS) is used to prepare exotic beams for nuclear astrophysics and structure studies at the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator Systems (ATLAS). In addition to research into the formation of heavy elements in the universe, ATLAS is used to aid production methods for new isotopes used in medical diagnostics and targeted therapy, and to help scientists study the effects of radiation on materials used in next-generation nuclear reactors.
