Army TARDEC’s Suspension Parameter Identification Evaluation Rig (SPIdER)

The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center’s (TARDEC) Large Suspension Parameter Identification Evaluation Rig (SPIdER) accurately characterizes vehicle suspension systems without modifying or disassembling most vehicles, and can apply both static and dynamic inputs to accurately measure multi-axle vehicle systems. The SPIdER, which can accommodate vehicles with a wheel base of 150 inches and up to 100,000 pounds, is capable of performing kinematics and compliance tests, including bounce, roll and steering ratio. During each test, more than 70 transducers are used to monitor displacement, angles, forces and pressures.

TARDEC is the ground system expert administratively aligned within the Army’s Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM). TARDEC’s mission is to develop, integrate, and sustain the right technology solutions for all manned and unmanned Department of Defense ground systems and combat support systems to improve current force effectiveness and provide superior capabilities for the future force.
