Innovative Water Treatment to Remove Ammonia, Arsenic, Iron and Manganese

High levels of ammonia in water, from either natural or agricultural sources, may be problematic. Ammonia interferes with chlorine disinfection and other treatment processes to remove contaminants. Researchers from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed technology to oxidize ammonia in drinking water through a natural nitrification process that combines aeration and biological filtration to oxidize ammonia. This innovative technology is licensed to AdEdge Water Technologies and marketed as “NoMonia,” an innovative water treatment technology to remove ammonia, arsenic, iron, and manganese.

The EPA’s National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL), headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, is recognized as a national leader in environmental problem-solving and risk management. The laboratory advances scientific and engineering solutions to manage current and future environmental risks. A component of EPA’s Office of Research and Development, NRMRL supports EPA’s efforts to improve air quality, manage chemical risks, clean up hazardous waste sites, and protect America’s water.
