Argonne combats marine oils

Marine oil spills carry substantial environmental, economic and health impacts. Argonne National Laboratory’s (ANL) invention, the Oleo Sponge, offers promise for dramatically improving our ability to combat this problem. The Oleo Sponge provides critical advantages over industry-standard technologies:

  • It's the first and only option for absorbing oil and other petroleum products below the water surface.
  • It's reusable, thus dramatically reducing waste resulting from the clean-up process.
  • It does not cause harm to the environment – a key advantage when compared with currently used chemical dispersants or burning techniques.
  • It demonstrates unparalleled sorption performance.
  • The petroleum products that are recovered can be salvaged for future use.
