Fermilab’s WireCAP Technology

Laboratory: Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab)

Technology: WireCAP is a novel packet capture engine for commodity network interface cards (NICs) in high-speed networks.

Opportunity: While WireCAP is currently in its technology development prototype stage, Fermilab is seeking additional partners to further develop and ready the technology for market.

Details: WireCAP is a novel packet capture engine for commodity NICs in high-speed networks. This new paradigm essentially exploits the computing parallelism of multicore systems and the inherent data parallelism of network traffic to accelerate packet capturing and processing.

Benefits: WireCAP introduces two new mechanisms—the ring-buffer-pool mechanism and the buddy-group-based offloading mechanism—to address the packet drop problem of packet capture in a high-speed network. WireCAP is efficient. It facilitates the design and operation of a user-space packet-processing application. Experiments have demonstrated that WireCAP achieves better packet capture performance when compared to existing packet capture engines.

Potential Application Areas:

  • Information technology (IT)
  • Cybersecurity
  • Software
