NSWC Crane - Early-Stage Material Investigation

Novel investigation into early-stage high strain rate behavior and shock deformation characteristics of materials is being conducted by scientists and engineers at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division</a> (NSWC Crane). The use of Flash X-Rays and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) imagery effectively can "freeze" the material in the early stages of collapse while allowing for recovery of post-blast material for analysis and measuring the speed of material deformation. Performance of materials under extreme conditions occurs in microseconds at explosive speeds—understanding these effects is a vital and unexplored field.
