Transportation Security Laboratory’s Trace Contamination Study Aid Tests New Detection Technologies
November 6, 2017

The Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) serves as a source for test articles and independent test and evaluation of detection technologies for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other government customers. A TSL research chemist works with a special mannequin – dubbed “Mr. Newton” – on which a mock suicide bomb vest has been placed. Mr. Newton can be programmed to walk, run, or sit; the skin can warm as a function of exertion, and it can even sweat through pores. The data provides input to development of detection requirements for trace contamination levels found on body surfaces.
