Wireless Laser Communications Innovation at SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific

SPAWAR labspot

Free-space optical (FSO) communications, or wireless laser communications, provides dramatically higher bandwidths compared to all other wireless methods and addresses communications limitations in undersea environments. While the technology has been around for over 40 years, only recently have components decreased enough in size, weight, power, and cost to make systems more deployable—a development that has caught the attention of business communities such as the oil and gas industry.

SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) is developing innovations in FSO communications, including a system that automatically selects the ideal laser wavelength for undersea communications. The research of SSC scientists like Dr. Burton Neuner III, a physicist, now has great commercial potential in addition to its ability to improve naval communications.
