NASA's Veggie Control System

The Veggie Control System is located in the International Space Station (ISS) environment simulator chamber in the Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The SSPF Veggie system shadows a vegetable production system onboard the ISS used as a food plant research platform.  Plant experiments destined for the ISS are first tested for flight using the SSPF Veggie System to determine if the plants are good candidates for testing in the ISS environment.  The four-unit ground system is also used to run ground control tests comparing its data to ISS test data.

Kennedy Space Center’s Space Crop Production Research area focuses on developing plant growth strategies and technologies to provide supplemental food crop production for astronauts.  Research centers on crop selection, environmental optimization, microbial food safety, crop microbiomes, and technology development and testing.  After testing at Kennedy Space Center, candidate crops and technologies are tested on the ISS or future exploration platforms.
