The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center's Office of Research and Technology Applications hosted a training session titled "How to prepare an invention disclosure for a patent attorney" Aug. 9.

Michael Gray, a patent attorney with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command's legal office, conducted the training. Attendees at the session discussed patentability, prior art searches, patent-style drawings and how to prepare a well-written invention disclosure.

"Inventions have transformed the lives and everyday surroundings of the average American," said Cindy Wallace, AMRDEC's ORTA deputy chief. "These changes have been apparent over the past several years in fields like transportation, communications, office equipment, medical devices and materials."

"AMRDEC uses patents as a means of providing legal protection for the inventions created by its scientists and engineers," Gray said. "Such legal protection equates to protecting and conserving the taxpayer dollars used to generate the government-owned inventions of AMRDEC. AMRDEC continually seeks to increase its portfolio of issued and pending patents."

Patents provide the patent owner with the legal right to exclude others from making, using or selling the patented invention. Patents can generate revenue through royalties obtained through licensing of an invention and can be used for defensive purposes in defending against patent infringement actions.

Inventions are part of AMRDEC's technology commercialization program, which seeks to stimulate commercial use of AMRDEC-developed technologies. AMRDEC technologies are available through exclusive or non-exclusive field-of-use licensing.
