BSA 11-20: Synthesis of Palladium Nanorods and Nanowires on High-Surface Area Carbon Supports

Palladium nanorods and nanowires are fabricated on high surface area carbon supports of the type often used to support fuel cell catalysts. No capping agents or surfactants are required. The nanoparticles are deposited in their final positions and do not move during formation of the membrane electrode assembly. The deposition takes only minutes, instead of the hours or days required by alternative chemical routes.
Patent Abstract: 
High surface area carbon black is first oxidized to generate a large coverage of functional groups on the surface. The oxidized carbon is suspended in water, placed on a glassy carbon electrode, and allowed to dry slowly. Palladium is then electrodeposited on the oxidized carbon.
The smooth surface of anisotropic palladium nanostructures prepared by this method shows an enhancement in activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and makes an attractive substrate for subsequent deposition of monolayers of platinum.
